mosques churches—religion

merges into religion seamlessly here—

as buildings hutments merge into shanties

tinkling bells are heard in tourist hotels

so is the azaan – all see the river

as their supreme religion here

Soul-sustaining, life-enabling

fishermen who alternately turn boatmen

are busily employed now

In the evening the river will transform

With the lights of the ganga aarti.
