Indian Modernist Artist | Master of Textural Abstraction & Rural Narratives
Born in 1942, Suhas Nimbalkar was an acclaimed Indian artist whose academic and artistic journey was shaped by the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, where he studied painting, and the Faculty of Fine Arts at M.S. University, Baroda. His work, grounded in modernist principles, explored deeply personal, textural, and abstract forms.
Over the decades, Nimbalkar's contributions to Indian art included several solo exhibitions and group shows across Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bhopal, Baroda, and Singapore. His one-man exhibitions were held at prestigious venues like Shridharani Art Gallery, New Delhi (1976, 1992, 1996) and Taj Art Gallery, Bombay (1993). He was honored with awards from the Kalidas Art Exhibition (1964) and Sahitya Kala Parishad (1976).
He participated in major national exhibitions such as the Lalit Kala Akademi’s National Exhibition, All India Kalidas Art Exhibition, and AIFACS annual shows. His works are part of the Lalit Kala Akademi collection as well as numerous private and institutional collections.
Beyond his studio practice, Suhas Nimbalkar actively engaged with public exhibitions and artist-led initiatives, promoting the visibility of modern Indian art. He participated in regional and national art fairs, bridging emerging artists with established institutions.
Nimbalkar’s focus on rural and natural subjects offered a subtle yet powerful commentary on preserving Indian cultural identity. His quiet, introspective style provided a meditative alternative to overtly political art, presenting an enduring connection to land, space, and memory.
