Biography & Education

Born: 1938, Quetta (now in Pakistan)

Education: Studied under K.S. Kulkarni at Triveni Kala Sangam, Delhi

M.K. Puri, born in 1938 in Quetta, migrated to Dehradun in 1953 following Partition. Initially passionate about music, he redirected his creativity toward fine art, studying painting under K.S. Kulkarni at Triveni Kala Sangam, Delhi. His early works focused on pen and ink drawings, later transitioning to oil and acrylic mediums. Puri's art often reflects themes of spirituality, urbanization, and human emotion, characterized by bold colors and dynamic compositions.

Artistic Style & Unique Approach

Puri’s paintings are deeply influenced by his love for music, human relationships, and emotional resonance. He forms delicate scenes of figures, often in musical contexts or emotive groupings, using subtle compositions and muted tones that weave together human expression and rhythm. Later, he shifted focus toward ceramics and mural art, becoming the first artist in India to use ceramic as a sculptural medium. His signature motifs often centered around the human head, exploring rich emotional expression through sculptural form.
