Anwar – Artist Profile

Anwar

Contemporary Indian Artist – Textile and Pastel Expressionist

About the Artist

Name: Anwar

Origin: Ambha, Madhya Pradesh, India

Now based in New Delhi, Anwar creates powerful visual statements by grinding his own pigments to develop pastel tones. Using these, he either weaves or paints—layering textures into abstract stories on canvas. His sensitivity to color and form reflect deep introspection and cultural memory.

Awards: All India Kalidas Exhibition, Bharat Bhavan Scholarship, Government of India Senior Fellowship, and National Award by Lalit Kala Akademi.

Technique: A unique blend of weaving and painting. He often mixes hand-ground pigment with glue binders to create distinct surface textures. Anwar sees every canvas as a woven tale of identity, emotion, and memory.

Inspiration: Rooted in rural heritage and spiritual symbolism, his works are contemplative explorations of self, society, and transformation.

Recent Exhibitions: India Art Fair, Triveni Kala Sangam, and curated shows at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Delhi.

Description: This artwork blends tradition with raw emotion. Through handcrafted pastels and layered technique, Anwar evokes nostalgia, tranquility, and belonging. The subtle interplay of woven texture and layered pigment creates a sense of visual meditation. The balance of minimalism and detail invites long introspection and silent emotion.

Color Scheme: Brown symbolizes stability, reliability, and warmth. It reflects earthiness and tradition while offering a sense of comfort and steadiness.

The brown color in this painting signifies stability, reliability, dependability, and approachability. Brown is the color of living wood and the earth. Calm and soothing to look at, browns are extraordinarily restful to look at. This is a color that symbolizes steadiness, dependability, the conservative nature of things and is cool and warm, both, at once. Brown also tends to invoke nostalgia. – Zanaida

An old feeling,
a feeling of belonging,
a feeling felt eons before,
those eons that I still adore – Kayan
